Scheduling

Backups that happen on their own.

Pick how often, when to start and how many to keep. BackupEncoder takes it from there, no browser tab needed.

Every N hours or days, from a set time.

There’s no fixed list of frequencies. Type a number, choose hours or days, and set the first run time in whichever timezone you pick, independent of the site’s own timezone.

Retention

Keep only the newest N backups. Older ones are pruned after each scheduled run, with their logs.

Runs in the background

WordPress’s own scheduler starts the backup and moves it along in short steps until it’s done. If a step is cut off, the next one carries on from where it stopped.

Last run at a glance

The Schedule tab shows when the next backup is due and how the last one went, including whether it had to be run a second time.

A note on timing

WordPress only checks for scheduled tasks when someone visits the site. On a quiet site a backup may start a little after its set time. If the exact time matters, have your host call wp-cron.php from a real server cron job.

*/5 * * * * curl -s https://example.com/wp-cron.php > /dev/null

If a backup has a problem

If a scheduled backup stops with an error, or finishes with files that failed the integrity check, BackupEncoder runs it again once, straight away. If the second attempt has a problem too, it emails you.

If a scheduled backup stops part-way, because the host stopped it for example, BackupEncoder carries it on from where it stopped and emails you to say so. If the same backup stops a second time, it is run again once, and you are emailed if that fails too.

Set the address under Email problems to on the Settings tab, or leave it blank to use the site’s administration email address. A file that only changed while the backup was running is noted in the log and is not counted as a problem.

Every step, from the first problem to the email, is recorded on the Audit Log tab.

Set it once. Stop worrying.

Turn on scheduled backups in the Schedule tab.
